EECA announces support for Road Lighting 2015

The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) has announced it will be again supporting the Road Lighting 2015 conference to help New Zealand road lighting authorities learn about LED road lighting developments that could halve New Zealand’s road lighting running costs.

"Independent assessments indicate LED lighting could save up to 50% or more of the energy currently consumed on road lighting and that this represents a major potential benefit, along with reduced maintenance costs, for councils that make the switch to LED road lighting," says Greg Visser, EECA General Manager, Business.

The significant savings involved prompted EECA to support the inaugural conference for road lighting professionals in New Zealand in 2014 and to continue to support the conference for its second year in 2015.

Road Lighting 2015 will be held on 9-10 March at the Langham Hotel in Auckland and will feature international experts with first-hand experience of switching to efficient road lighting. It will again be run by independent management consultants Strategic Lighting Partners (SLP) Ltd.

SLP Directors Godfrey Bridger and Bryan King say: "Energy efficiency and safer road conditions are well-researched benefits of LED road lighting. The 2014 conference opened the eyes of the road lighting community to the opportunities available, and the 2015 conference will build on concepts of liveable cities and the sustainable night economy."

Greg Visser says: "If New Zealand’s road lights were switched from high-pressure sodium (HPS) lighting to LED road lighting, it would save the country about 100 gigawatt hours of electricity a year - enough to power more than 11,000 homes.

"International experience indicates that energy savings could be increased even further if the switch to LED road lighting is accompanied by a switch to modern lighting control systems that allow for ‘adaptive’ dimming and brightening of road lights to suit the prevailing conditions, from traffic density to weather.

"EECA is keen to help communicate these findings to road controlling authorities in New Zealand so that switching to efficient lighting can be considered in future plans and New Zealand keeps up with the rest of the world in adopting this technology," Mr Visser says.

The inaugural conference in 2014 won the Public Relations Institute of NZ annual award for a "Special Event". More than 95% of attendees surveyed after the conference said they would attend again.
