First ever TEDxWanaka event to be held in June

With TED talks now watched by millions on the Internet, the growing phenomenon of idea-based conferences has captured people’s curiosity around the world. Now the first ever TEDxWanaka date has been set.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organised events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organised TED event.

TEDxWanaka will be held at The Rippon Hall on Saturday 21 June. Tickets go on sale Sunday 1 June, costing $95 and limited to 100.

Event organiser and TEDxWanaka license holder, Jo Guest said the shortest day of the year would now also be one of the most inspiring.

"It may well be dark and cold outside but the lucky few inside Rippon Hall will be enlightened, entertained and sometimes challenged by our keynote speakers," she said.

"Wanaka is already full of people with bright ideas and we want to provide a new forum for that creativity and at the same time inject fresh energy from people who are already leading new thinking in other parts of New Zealand and around the world."

At TEDxWanaka handpicked speakers from around the country will present on a diverse range of topics based around the theme of ‘change makers’. Short talks, demonstrations and performances that are idea-focused will be designed to spark conversation, connection and community. Talks on the day will be filmed and submitted for the opportunity to be featured on TED.com.

Ms Guest is working with a group of local volunteers to manage the event and aiming to share with the world what Wanaka and New Zealand has to offer.

As a non-profit endeavour TEDxWanaka relies on the immense generosity of community support. Ms Guest invited anyone interested in getting involved with the event as a financial or in-kind supporter to contact her.

She said details of speakers will be released soon on the event’s website www.tedxwanaka.com and Facebook page.
