Fletcher Building helping rebuild Christchurch

Fletcher Building will construct 237 new homes in Christchurch over the next two years following the company’s appointment as preferred development partner for the Awatea/Carrs Rd Housing Development.

Building and Housing Minister Dr Nick Smith made the announcement today at the site. Fletcher Building was selected following a competitive procurement process.

Fletcher Building Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Mark Adamson said he was proud of the Fletcher Residential team who worked so hard to win the tender. "Rebuilding Christchurch is very important to Fletcher Building. We’ve played a key role in the home repairs programme and in rebuilding the city’s infrastructure with our SCIRT partners. It is a real honor to be named preferred developer for the Awatea/Carrs Rd Housing Development. We are pleased to be working in partnership with the government to provide affordable housing for the people of Christchurch."

He said the company’s experience in residential housing has moved with the times from the first weatherboard home constructed in Dunedin in 1904 to the State Houses of the 1930s and 1950s, and more recently projects including the Stonefields development in Auckland. "Our recent developments clearly show Fletcher Residential has the expertise and experience to provide affordable homes in a well-designed environment that creates a community where people want to live."

Work on Awatea/Carrs Rd is due to begin later this year with the first homes being available for sale in 2015. The development includes stand alone and terrace homes available at open market and affordable prices. Of the 237 homes being built 89 are affordable homes with purchase prices of less than $400,000. Some of these will be developed in partnership with the New Zealand Housing Foundation.

A public playground, wetland plantings and walkways connecting residents with green spaces, public transport and other community facilities are other key features of the development. Fletcher Residential is committed to consultation with local Iwi and other community groups in terms of the overall development design.
