There's hope workers getting the axe from the Norske Skog mill in Kawerau may invest some of their redundancy payout in the region.
The company has confirmed 110 workers will lose their jobs, with one of the two paper machines at the mill permanently closing yesterday.
Eastern Bay of Plenty Chamber of Commerce chairman Gerard Casey wants laid off workers to invest in local business.
He says while it's a small region, there are plenty of opportunities for business growth.
