Wellington City Council's chief executive has lost his job.
Gary Poole has been in the role for the past 15 years, but councillors have decided not to renew his contract.
He's led the council since 1997, and his had his contract renewed twice with his current term ending in March.
Councillors have decided not to keep him on the $419,000 a year job and have instead opted to seek a new chief executive.
Mr Poole has told his staff that the move is a significant disappointment and he's incredibly proud of what he's done for Wellington's international reputation.
Mayor Celia Wade-Brown says a decision on a replacement will be announced in the near future.
