Taupo District Council appoints new district events manager

Taupō District Council’s new events manager Steve Giles is set to hit the ground running once he officially starts in the role on December 1.

With the events season about to get into full swing, his previous experience in leadership roles will put him in good stead to lead the council’s new-look events team that will focus on maximising the benefits events bring to the district, as well as optimising use of council venues.

For Steve, being appointed as district events manager is the realisation of a long term goal to work in a role where he could make the most of the commercial business acumen he has developed and the passion he has for both the Taupō District and the events industry.

Most recently, Steve has been the general manager at Taupō Golf Club where, among other achievements, he has built an excellent understanding of the value events bring to the district. "I am really excited by the opportunity to drive this role and make my community proud by retaining and bringing quality events to a district I have a huge passion for," he said.

Council’s strategic manager business development and improvement, Will Samuel, said Steve was the stand out among a number of quality candidates. "Steve’s skills, combined with a demonstrated ability to collaborate and engage with key stakeholders, will allow him to successfully lead a high performing team," said Mr Samuel.

"Our events industry is a key contributor to our district’s economy and with the new team structure we will be able to have a stronger focus on both retaining and growing our customer base with a view to increasing that contribution even further," he said.
