$A up as US braces for storm clean-up

The Australian dollar is higher as markets await the fallout from a hurricane sweeping the US east coast.

At 0630 AEDT on Wednesday, the local unit was trading at 103.68 US cents, up from 103.43 US cents on Tuesday.

New York and other US eastern seaboard cities were hit by Atlantic storm Sandy early on Monday night, causing flooding and damage estimated at $US20 billion ($A19.45 billion).

However, speculation that the cost could be less than expected caused the US dollar to slide against all its major counterparts.
