The Federal Reserve cut the federal funds target rate by 50 basis points to a range of 4.75% to 5.00%. It's the central bank's first rate cut in four years. In its statement, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) states, "The Committee has gained greater confidence that inflation is moving sustainably toward 2 percent, and judges that the risks to achieving its employment and inflation goals are roughly in balance." The statement adds that "the economic outlook is uncertain." Based on the projections, Fed members see two more 25 basis point cuts this year, followed by four more in 2025. STORY: Tupperware - whose iconic plastic food containers once filled millions of American kitchens - has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The move comes after several years of falling sales and failed turnaround efforts...as demand slipped due to rivals making cheaper and more environmentally friendly containers. The company said it will now chart out a sale process for the business.By doing so, it has likely sealed the fate of the so-called Tupperware Lady...the nickname given to a generation of post-war housewives, seeking empowerment, who sold the plastic products at in-home gatherings known as "Tupperware parties."The company enjoyed a brief resurgence during the pandemic as more Americans cooked at home amid travel curbs. But - after some wild swings during the "meme stock" rallies of that period - shares of Tupperware ultimately slumped in 2023, as it delayed annual reports and breached its credit obligations.
The one big question that remains around the Federal Reserve's plans to cut interest rates is by how much? "The economic impact between a 25 and 50 basis point rate cut is very small, at least from on the loan rate side around $4 billion, which is nothing in the grand scheme of things. I think it's more important what [Fed Chair Jerome] Powell says and what we see in terms of rate projections, how quickly they'll be cutting rates over the next year," Ritholtz Wealth Management Chief Market Strategist Callie Cox tells Yahoo Finance anchor Julie Hyman at the Future Proof Festival. Cox underlines the fact that "words matter" as Powell is set to give a press conference at 2:30 p.m. ET following the Fed's rate policy decision: "So I want to get updated context from Powell on the job market, how worried he is about unemployment over the next year or so. He's been saying he's not worried but it's time to cut rates. So what's going on there, what's the dynamic?"
