STORY: The fact that the U.S. military continues to fly the V22 Osprey aircraft, despite Japan’s request to ground them until they’re vetted to be safe, is raising concerns in Tokyo. Earlier this week, an Osprey fell into the sea near Japan’s Yakushima Island. One person was found and confirmed dead, while the search continues for the seven others on board. The cause of the crash is under investigation. Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno on Friday aired Tokyo’s concerns. “As I said before, in response to the crash, our government, including the Japanese Defence Minister and the Japanese Foreign Minister, has officially requested the U.S. side to conduct flights of Ospreys deployed in Japan only after these flights are confirmed to be safe, except for search and rescue operations.” Japan had asked the U.S. on Thursday to stop flying Ospreys, but Japan’s regional defense bureau counted at least 20 Osprey landings and takeoffs around U.S. bases by Thursday afternoon. On the same day, the Pentagon said it was still flying Ospreys for now, and wasn’t aware of any official request for their grounding. But the Japan Self-Defense Forces which also operates Ospreys, has at least, suspended its own flights of the transport aircraft. Deployment of the hybrid aircraft, especially in Japan, has not been without controversy. Critics of the U.S. military presence in Japan’s southwest islands say it is prone to accidents. But as a close U.S. ally, Japan hosts the biggest overseas concentration of U.S. military power – including the only forward-deployed American carrier strike group.
The dollar dipped on Friday, while the euro edged higher after steep overnight losses as traders weighed data that showed inflation was easing, stoking expectations that interest rates had peaked and central banks would soon start cutting rates. The eagerly awaited personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index rose 3% in October from a year ago, moderating from a three-month string of 3.4% readings though still above the Fed's 2% target. "While the 3% level remains too high to declare victory on inflation, it marks a new low for the series that will likely please the Fed and alleviate any pressure to implement further hikes," said Ryan Brandham, head of global capital markets, North America, at Validus Risk Management.

Najmul Hossain Shanto added just one run to his overnight score and was out for 105 as Bangladesh lost a succession of wickets Friday before reaching 308-7 at lunch, an overall lead of 301 in the first cricket test against New Zealand. The hosts started Day 4 on 212-3 but lost Shanto in the second over when Tim Southee had him caught down the leg side, ending a 98-run fourth-wicket stand. Mushfiqur Rahim continued and raised his 27th test half-century off 79 balls, with an outside-edge two against Southee.

A stellar rally in equities and bonds suggests market confidence is high for the world economy to reach a soft landing after a run of aggressive interest rate hikes. Yet labour markets are softening, the euro zone faces recession and China's property sector is in crisis. But unemployment is rising, nearing a closely-watched 'Sahm rule' threshold, that has shown historically a recession is underway when the three-month rolling average unemployment rate rises half a point above the low of the prior 12 months.

There was no trace of Hanan Yablonka — not on the 42-year-old Israeli's social media accounts nor on his phone, found in the bullet-riddled car he and three friends tried to flee in after Hamas militants attacked the music festival they were attending in southern Israel. “It’s a big nightmare," Yablonka's niece, Emanuel Abady, told The Associated Press.
