Mizuho Americas director of clean energy equity research Maheep Manley joins Julie Hyman and Josh Lipton on Market Domination to discuss what next week's expected interest rate cut and the upcoming presidential election mean for the solar energy sector. “There's a nice transition from interest rates to solar,” Manley says explaining that “we've seen this industry react to any positive news on interest rates” and “we'll continue to see that going forward.” The analyst tells Yahoo Finance that most companies in the solar industry have a high debt-to-capital ratio, so there’s “a lot of upside there” if the Federal Reserve does in fact opt to cut rates. Solar companies “generally tend to do better in a lower interest rate environment,” he adds. Solar stocks came into focus after the presidential debate on Tuesday. A victory for Vice President Kamala Harris in November could “keep the status quo of the Inflation Reduction Act,” which includes tax incentives for clean energy. The analyst highlights that First Solar is “the biggest beneficiary” of current tax incentives as “more than 60% of their EPS in our estimates for 2025 would come from these incentives from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Manley adds, “I don't think it'll be very bad news if Republicans or Trump come on in,” with “at worst” a 20% or 25% impact on solar stocks. Lawyers for Sam Bankman-Fried claim in an appeal filed Friday that the imprisoned FTX founder was the victim of a rush to judgment by a public that wrongly believed he was guilty of stealing billions of dollars from his customers and investors before he was even arrested. The lawyers filed papers with the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals asking a three-judge panel to reverse his conviction and assign the case to a new judge for a retrial, saying the trial judge “imposed a draconian quarter-century sentence on this first-time, non-violent offender” after they contend he hurried the jury into reaching a one-day verdict to cap off a complex four-week trial.
The Federal Reserve is in focus next week, as uncertainty swirls over how much the U.S. central bank will cut interest rates at its monetary policy meeting and the pace at which it will reduce borrowing costs in coming months. The S&P 500 index is just 1% shy of its July record high despite weeks of market swings sparked by worries over the economy and seesawing bets on the size of the cut at the Fed's Sept. 17-18 meeting. After fluctuating sharply throughout the week, Fed funds futures on Friday showed traders pricing an almost equal chance of a 25 basis point cut and a 50 basis point reduction, according to CME Fedwatch.

STORY: :: Lisa Bernhard, Reuters:: Eric Lynch, Managing Director, Scharf InvestmentsTraders' bets on a 50-basis point rate cut jumped to roughly 50% on Friday, CME's FedWatch Tool showed.Prior to this, most bets were on the Fed sticking to a smaller 25-basis point cut, especially after this week's news of slightly higher core consumer and producer prices in August."It's reflective of what we've seen since the third quarter started," said Lynch, "which is a lot of consternation from investors about where the economy is going, where inflation is going to land and what the Fed can do in terms of rate cutting. And so stocks, the VIX and now the CME FedWatch Tool is jumping all over the place."Speaking with Reuters' Lisa Bernhard, Lynch also discussed how stock gains don't necessarily correlate with presidential policy. While former President Trump has invoked the "drill, baby, drill" mantra regarding U.S. oil production, Lynch noted that the energy sector was actually "the single worst [performing] sector during his presidential term."And for Biden, who's 2020 campaign platform opposed new fracking on federal land, energy "has been his best [performing] sector."
