An Alabama boy was mauled to death by a dog owned by family friends who live next door to the child's family, according to reports.

Beau Clark, 4, was riding his bike and ended up in the neighbor’s yard when he was attacked by their dog on Monday, the Morgan County Sheriff Office said in a statement to PEOPLE.

Police responded to initial reports that a child had been hit by a car in the home just outside the Alabama city of Hartselle, police said in the statement.

While on their way, deputies learned that the child had been attacked by a dog. Once at the scene, emergency responders tried to treat Beau and his father, who had also been bitten, according to the statement.

Beau died after he was taken to a local hospital; his father was treated and eventually released, police said.

The attacking dog was an Olde English bulldog, WBMA reported; it was promptly euthanized, police said.

Beau had several prior interactions with the dog, the police statement said, and the dog had no history of aggressive behavior.

Investigators announced on Thursday no charges will be filed.

In a statement shared through the sheriff’s office, Beau's parents – Hailey and Kevin Clark – paid tribute to his “cheeky grin and his contagious laugh.”

“We miss his feet running across the house waking us up,” reads a part of the statement. “His hugs and love were like none I’ve ever known.”

The statement says Beau was “his daddy’s shadow” and played with his mom, who the boy called his “cute little mama.”

“What a treasure he has been to love and take care of the past four years and three months,” reads another part of the statement. “He’s taught me to let go of things that really just don’t matter. Who knew you could learn so much from such a small child?”

A GoFundMe has been set up to assist the family with the funeral and next steps. A scholarship fund has also been set up in Beau's honor, the sheriff's office announced on Thursday.
