Most of us would be happy to simply own a house, but what about an entire town? One Tasmanian town has just hit the market, but you’ll need at least $12 million to call it yours.

Tarraleah is a historic estate located in Tasmania’s central highlands about two hours’ drive northwest of Hobart. The estate spans 147 hectares and comes with restaurants, cafes, function spaces, as well as a church, nature walks and a lake brimming with brown trout.

Accommodation in the Tarraleah estate includes a luxury lodge with nine suites, a dining room, library, bar and wood fireplace. There are also restored, Art-Deco-style cottages, lakeside villas, cabins, a caravan park and a schoolhouse that has been converted into studio accommodation rooms.

Other buildings include The Edge Restaurant and Function Centre overlooking the Nive River valley, as well as the Gate House, which previously operated as a sauna and spa, with massage rooms and a gym.

Property agents Peterswald for Property said buyers had the opportunity to create “a contemporary tourist oasis, new township or return it to an esteemed residential estate”.

A historic estate

Tarraleah was originally built in the 1930s to house workers who were building the hydro-electric scheme. The town’s population grew to several thousand people, but later declined in the 1980s and 1990s when capital works were completed in the area.

The estate was purchased by current owner and property developer Julian Homer in 2006. Homer spent 13 years restoring the town’s 33 Art Deco buildings. He previously listed the estate for sale but it was not sold despite local and international interest.

Tarraleah is now largely devoted to tourism, including being used for weddings, functions and conferences.

Tarraleah Estate is for sale by expressions of interest from $12 million. Expressions close February 17, 2023.
