ANZ (ANZ.AX) has apologised to customers after it faced an outage impacting its internet banking, app and ATMs.

The bank posted a tweet saying it was aware of a “technical issue” impacting its services, leaving customers frustrated.

“We’re aware of a technical issue impacting ANZ services including the ANZ App, Internet Banking, ATMs and point-of-sale terminals,” the bank said.

“We’re currently investigating this as a matter of urgency and will be back with an update as soon as possible. We’re so sorry for the inconvenience.”

Customers responded to the bank in frustration with one calling for compensation for the inconvenience and “embarrassment” the issues have caused.

ANZ updated customers at around 4:30pm AEST saying services were beginning to resume as normal and apologised again for the inconvenience.

"Services are coming back online now and should be working again. We know this has been frustrating and inconvenient for many of you and we are sorry this happened," the bank said.

A year of bank outages

There have been a number of bank outages so far this year that have impacted all the major financial institutions as well as some other big Aussie companies.

In June, ANZ, CommBank and Westpac all went down as well as St George, Bank of Melbourne and Bank SA.

Also involved in the same outage were Australia Post, Telstra, Virgin Australia and the NBN.

CBA has been the worst affected with five outages this year - leaving the bank to offer $50 apology payments to affected customers.

The first incident this year came in March when some CBA customers were unable to access their Netbank services.

Then in April this year CBA customers across the country were unable to use their cards after it suffered another major online outage.
