ST LOUIS (AP) _ Arch Coal Inc. (ARCH) on Thursday reported fourth-quarter earnings of $86.1 million.

The St. Louis-based company said it had profit of $4.44 per share.

The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $3.28 per share.

The coal producer posted revenue of $651 million in the period, also topping Street forecasts. Four analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $558.1 million.

For the year, the company reported profit of $312.6 million, or $15.15 per share. Revenue was reported as $2.45 billion.

Arch Coal shares have increased slightly since the beginning of the year. The stock has decreased nearly 8 percent in the last 12 months.
