Yahoo Finance Aussies turn to OnlyFans as cost-of-living crisis takes hold
More and more Aussies are turning to side hustles to combat the cost-of-living crisis, with new online analysis indicating x-rated subscription site OnlyFans has seen an influx in content creators.
Coinciding with the beginning of the Reserve Bank's interest rate hikes in May, data revealed by digital intelligence platform Similarweb shows visits to the site's subscription section, where accounts set the price for users to view their content, have drastically increased.
By the end of May, there had been a 90 per cent increase in visits compared to the previous month.
And while visits slightly dropped off for June, it has since risen a staggering 67 per cent by the end of July.
"Despite record low unemployment rates, interest in side hustles is growing exponentially as people look to make ends meet," SimilarWeb said.
OnlyFans has surged in popularity in recent years following its launch in late 2016. The site has become well known in Australia, with interest fuelled by celebrities signing up and inspiring others to earn big on the platform.

Former Supercar driver Renee Gracie famously signed up to the platform, reportedly earning as much as $500,000 a month through subscriptions to her page.
And a source told Yahoo Lifestyle earlier this year former MAFS star Jessika Power can rake in up to $200,000 a month.

SimilarWeb also observed Amazon's delivery service, which allows Australians to deliver for them with their own vehicles saw a 133 per cent rise in sign-up traction in 2022 compared to the same period last year.
Uber enjoyed a 70 per cent increase, AirTasker 14 per cent and DoorDash an "astronomical" 1159 per cent rise.
According to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), released in March 2022, 850,000 Aussies are being forced to take on second or even third jobs.
A study by Simply Business found 55 per cent of side hustles were set up during the pandemic.
