Aust shares set to open lower

Australian shares look set to open lower on the back of a fall on Wall Street overnight as Washington's threat to increase tariffs fanned trade war fears.

In futures trading, the SPI200 futures contract was down eight points, or 0.13 per cent, to 6,166 points at 0720 AEST, pointing to a lower open for the Australian stock market on Thursday.

On Wall Street the Dow Jones Industrial Average is down 219.21 points, or 0.88 per cent at 24,700 points.

The Australian dollar is buying 73.68 US cents.
