TUPELO, Miss. (AP) _ BancorpSouth Bank (BXS) on Wednesday reported fourth-quarter earnings of $47.1 million.

The bank, based in Tupelo, Mississippi, said it had earnings of 47 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, were 57 cents per share.

The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 54 cents per share.

The bank posted revenue of $237.9 million in the period. Its revenue net of interest expense was $211.9 million, which missed Street forecasts. Five analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $221.4 million.

For the year, the company reported profit of $221.3 million, or $2.23 per share. Revenue was reported as $857.3 million.

BancorpSouth shares have climbed 9 percent since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, shares hit $28.55, a drop of 19 percent in the last 12 months.
