Bella Hadid is a regular fixture on the Cannes red carpet, often making headlines with her fashion choices, which have ranged from the classically glamorous to the daringly risqué.

She made her first appearance at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival last night, attending the 75th anniversary screening of The Innocent, and once again impressed with her choice of attire. Instead of choosing something new and bespoke, the model worked with stylist Law Roach and looked to the archives - something she has done several times on the red carpet in recent years, particularly in Cannes - wearing a vintage Versace gown.

Hadid channelled old Hollywood glamour in the strapless dress, which was from Gianni Versace's spring/summer 1987 collection - which would have originally been shown 10 years before the model was born. The design featured a figure-hugging mermaid silhouette with a velvet skirt and voluminous draped detailing around the hips, which culminated in a dramatic bow at the back.

She finished her look with a sleek updo, graphic eye make-up, pointed black pumps and glittering Chopard jewellery.

The vintage looks that Hadid has previously worn at Cannes include historic designs by Jean Paul Gaultier and Roberto Cavalli, the likes of which immediately became iconic Cannes red carpet moments.

Vintage fashion has become increasingly popular with the A-list in recent years, particularly for big red-carpet moments. We have seen many of the most influential faces in fashion - from Zendaya to Jennifer Aniston, Kim Kardashian and Gwyneth Paltrow - flock to past designer collections, reigniting the conversation about, and interest in, wearing archival pieces.

This new awareness around vintage has much to do with concerns around sustainability and it can definitely be seen as a direct consequence of a new environmental consciousness, but also due to a desire to wear something unique, with significance and a story.

"The rise of vintage on the red carpet can be attributed to more and more celebrities looking to have a truly one-of-a-kind moment," Seth Weisser, the co-founder and CEO of NYC’s vintage store What Goes Around Comes Around, told us previously. "Vintage styles are often quite rare because they have been discontinued and that presents an incredible opportunity for celebrities to express their individual style. Additionally, in today’s climate, most celebrities are doing everything they can to contribute to the sustainability cause."
