How to get Beyoncé's 'Renaissance' blonde, according to her colourist Rita Hazan

It's no secret that many of us aim to channel the same otherworldly aesthetic that Beyoncé brings to her music, style, and beauty choices — and her hair is no exception. Rita Hazan, celebrity colourist and owner of the namesake Rita Hazan Salon in New York City, has been the mastermind behind Beyoncé's covetable colour — from her early honey brown to her now-signature Spotlight Blonde shade — for more than a decade.

While Hazan's new take on Beyoncé's blonde, with all-over highlights, is proprietary to the artist, she has a few tips for an easy transition from a darker-to-lighter hair colour at home. "If you're thinking of going blonde, I suggest taking it slow," Hazan told us back in 2018. "It's hard on the hair and can be damaging to dye someone's hair from dark brown to platinum blonde in one session. It's best to make multiple appointments and lighten your locks little by little each time."

To find out more about the process behind Beyoncé's new and improved blonde highlights, BAZAAR.com caught up with the artist for an A-list-approved master class in hair care maintenance, colour evolution, plus her pro tips on avoiding unwanted brassiness.

In what ways is the tone of Spotlight Blonde different from hair colour Beyoncé has worn in the past?

This version of blonde we went with for Renaissance has a little more dimension, so the highlights placed throughout her hair stand out a little more than usual.

For readers looking to copy this shade, what are some key things they should mention to their colourists?

Ask for dimension, but not too much. You don't want chunky highlights. You want in-between chunky and fine highlights. Also, don't be afraid to lighten your natural colour one to two shades. It should not make your colour look orange. Lightening the base can make your hair look softer, which brings it all together so it doesn't look overly stripey.

You’ve worked with Beyoncé for a number of years — could you provide a little insight into your creative process together, in terms of hair care?

The health and quality of Beyoncé's hair is most important for both of us. Beyoncé and I are always on the same page when it comes to keeping her hair healthy and its overall colour. After applying her colour and highlights, I always make sure to leave behind a shampoo, gloss, and Weekly Remedy Treatment so she can maintain colour between visits.

What does the word 'renaissance' mean to you, in terms of beauty?

I think we all had a period of feeling 'blah' during and after Covid, and now there's a big shift in our culture where a majority of people are looking to feel glamorous and gorgeous again. One of the easiest ways to do so is by brightening your hair colour. In my opinion, the process is the beginning of a shift, especially when combined with make-up and how you dress, which can make anyone feel more beautiful and confident.

What are some key tips to maintaining a single-process blonde or all-over highlights, as well as minimising brassiness?

I always suggest using our True Color Ultimate Shine Gloss every time you wash your hair, starting from when you first decide to colour it. The gloss ensures your overall hair colour stays balanced and doesn't turn brassy.

Since we’re on the topic, are there any fall hair colour trends you’re seeing on the horizon?

When it comes to next season's colour trends, I think we're going to see people continue to gravitate toward lighter tones. The beauty renaissance has just picked up momentum, and I don't see it changing anytime soon until winter months — we're not ready to let the summer season and feeling go quite yet.
