Broadridge Financial Solutions' (NYSE:BR) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's

Broadridge Financial Solutions, Inc. (NYSE:BR) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 5th of October to $0.725. This takes the dividend yield to 1.6%, which shareholders will be pleased with.

Broadridge Financial Solutions' Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions

We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Broadridge Financial Solutions was earning enough to cover the previous dividend, but it was paying out quite a large proportion of its free cash flows. By paying out so much of its cash flows, this could indicate that the company has limited opportunities for investment and growth.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 50.5%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 43%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Broadridge Financial Solutions Has A Solid Track Record

The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. Since 2012, the dividend has gone from $0.64 total annually to $2.90. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 16% per annum over that time. So, dividends have been growing pretty quickly, and even more impressively, they haven't experienced any notable falls during this period.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. We are encouraged to see that Broadridge Financial Solutions has grown earnings per share at 11% per year over the past five years. Shareholders are getting plenty of the earnings returned to them, which combined with strong growth makes this quite appealing.

Our Thoughts On Broadridge Financial Solutions' Dividend

In summary, it's great to see that the company can raise the dividend and keep it in a sustainable range. On the plus side, the dividend looks sustainable by most measures but it is let down by the lack of cash flows. This looks like it could be a good dividend stock going forward, but we would note that the payout ratio has been at higher levels in the past so it could happen again.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. For example, we've identified 2 warning signs for Broadridge Financial Solutions (1 is significant!) that you should be aware of before investing. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
