Passive investing in index funds can generate returns that roughly match the overall market. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. For example, the Calnex Solutions plc (LON:CLX) share price is up 44% in the last 1 year, clearly besting the market decline of around 6.4% (not including dividends). That's a solid performance by our standards! We'll need to follow Calnex Solutions for a while to get a better sense of its share price trend, since it hasn't been listed for particularly long.
With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.
To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During the last year Calnex Solutions grew its earnings per share (EPS) by 11%. This EPS growth is significantly lower than the 44% increase in the share price. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it a year ago.
The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).
We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Calnex Solutions shareholders have gained 45% over the last year, including dividends. Unfortunately the share price is down 6.2% over the last quarter. Shorter term share price moves often don't signify much about the business itself. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For instance, we've identified 2 warning signs for Calnex Solutions (1 is a bit concerning) that you should be aware of.
