Rio aims to lift ore sales despite Q1 dip

Rio Tinto plans to increase iron ore sales this year to 350 million tonnes, despite prices being at decade lows and surprisingly weak quarterly production. The world's second largest iron ore miner shipped 12 per cent less ore during the March quarter compared to the previous period. Rio and BHP Billiton have been blamed by critics for over-supplying the market and pushing down the price of Australia's top export earner during the period from above $US70 a tonne to below $US50. With three quarters of the year left, Rio is still forecasting shipments of nearly 350 million tonnes, up 17 per cent, for 2015.

  • Probe into unusual $A trades finds nothing AAP - 3 hours ago

Investigations into suspicious trades in the Australian dollar before the Reserve Bank's February and March interest rate decision have not uncovered anything improper. In the minutes of its April board meeting, released Tuesday, the RBA said the movements could be because of automated trades and the fact there was very little trade in the Australian dollar just before the bank's interest rate announcement. "The illiquid conditions that existed in the foreign exchange market at that time meant that small trades could move the price by relatively large amounts," the RBA said. The RBA said that the Australian Securities and Investments Commission has "not identified any evidence of procedural lapses or conduct that could have led to the early release of relevant information".

  • Rio iron ore sales fell in Q1 AAP - 5 hours ago
Rio iron ore sales fell in Q1

Rio Tinto's iron ore shipments have fallen 12 per cent during the March quarter, a period when it was largely blamed for over-supplying and pushing down the price of Australia's top export. Rio, the world's second largest iron ore miner, shipped 72.5 million tonnes for the three months to March, well down on the previous quarter and on expectations of about 80 million tonnes. The iron ore price went from above $US70 a tonne to below $US50 during that period. Deutsche Bank analysts had forecast sales of 82.7 million tonnes for Rio, while UBS' forecast was for nearly 80 million.

  • Petrol prices rise and fall faster these days, says NZIER BusinessDesk - 8 hours ago

Rising global prices for crude oil and a 4 cents per litre increase in petrol prices this week saw Z Energy release updated research today from the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research showing petrol prices react to international price changes within a fortnight and fall as quickly as they rise. In a report titled "Petrol prices (still) rise and fall at the same speed", NZIER says the main change it has noted since about 2010 is that international oil price changes are passed through mostly within the following one or two weeks, rather than taking three or four weeks to filter through to the motorist at the petrol pump. "Both oil price reductions and oil price increases end up in retail prices more quickly than they used to," says the report, dated April 20 and released this morning by Z chief executive Mike Bennetts. The publication coincides with criticism from the Automobile Association about the decision by Z and BP to raise petrol prices by 4 cents a litre this week.
