CALGARY, Alberta (AP) _ Cenovus Energy Inc. (CVE) on Thursday reported a second-quarter loss of $323.9 million, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier.

The Calgary, Alberta-based company said it had a loss of 26 cents per share. Losses, adjusted for non-recurring costs and to account for discontinued operations, were 19 cents per share.

The results fell short of Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was breakeven on a per-share basis.

The oil company posted revenue of $4.67 billion in the period.

Cenovus shares have risen 15 percent since the beginning of the year. The stock has increased 32 percent in the last 12 months.
