Christina Aguilera has opened up about what it was like for her and Britney Spears growing up in the limelight, describing the experience as "crazy". The pair, both now in their 40s, met back in 1993 when they were cast on Disney's The All-New Mickey Mouse Club. Despite only being 12 (Christina) and 11-years-old (Britney) at the time, the hit show launched their careers, along with the likes of Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling.

But, with their newfound fame came the scrutiny and pressures of the public eye, something which has undeniably had an impact on both women – particularly Britney, who was placed under a conservatorship back in 2008 after a bout of mental health issues.

"I never [want] to speak out of turn about somebody that I have so much respect and admiration for… [but] growing up in this business can be crazy," Christina said during an appearance on The Enrique Santos Show, referencing Britney's 13-year conservatorship that came to an end just last year. "If anybody gets that and understands what that means at that time coming up, it definitely would be her and I."

Speaking about the end of Britney's conservatorship, the Dirrty singer said: "I couldn’t be happier for her, and every woman deserves to feel empowered and to own that for themselves, however they see fit."

Christina's kind words come just a few weeks after she was publicly called out by Britney who felt she wasn't being supported by her former co-star. It all started after Christina was ushered away from a journalist who questioned her about Britney at the Latin Grammys. After being asked if she had any communication with Britney, Christina's publicist replied "No, we’re not doing that tonight. I’m sorry," before the singer added: "I can't. But I’m happy for her."

But, Britney wasn't pleased with how the situation was handled, later taking to Instagram to tell fans: "I love and adore everyone who supported me… but refusing to speak when you know the truth, is equivalent to a lie!!!! 13 years being in a corrupt abusive system yet why is it such a hard topic for people to talk about???"

For a moment, it looked like the on-again-off-again friends might be very much off, again, with a source close to Christina revealing she was "genuinely surprised" by the very public shading. "Christina wasn’t expecting to be called out from Britney, she was genuinely surprised over the call out. They obviously aren’t close friends with each other anymore, but they still hold a history with each other that Christina feels she should still protect," an insider told HollywoodLife.

The source continued: "Now Christina would like to have a private chat with Britney to settle some issues that still clearly lie."

Here's hoping the pair have mended their friendship!
