Dangerous ladders banned

The government has banned multi-purpose ladders that don't meet safety standards.

Consumer Affairs Minister Simon Bridges says one product sold on Trade Me buckled and collapsed moments after a 90kg man climbed onto it - the ladder was supposed to hold up to 150kg.

Mr Bridges says his department tested similar types and they all failed loading requirements.

"The aluminium construction was very thin... it is unacceptable that the public should be at significant risk of injury," he said on Thursday.

He has issued an unsafe goods notice which prohibits the sale or supply of multi-purpose ladders which don't meet safety standards.

The ban will be enforced by customs at the border and by the Commerce Commission in the marketplace.

Breaches of the notice can be punished by a fine of up to $60,000 for an individual and up to $200,000 for a company.

It is in effect from Thursday for 18 months, when it will be reviewed.
