Delegat Group (NZSE:DGL) Has Gifted Shareholders With A Fantastic 138% Total Return On Their Investment

Delegat Group Limited (NZSE:DGL) shareholders have seen the share price descend 13% over the month. But in stark contrast, the returns over the last half decade have impressed. In fact, the share price is 117% higher today. Generally speaking the long term returns will give you a better idea of business quality than short periods can. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean it's cheap now.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During five years of share price growth, Delegat Group achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 11% per year. This EPS growth is lower than the 17% average annual increase in the share price. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did five years ago. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Delegat Group, it has a TSR of 138% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

Delegat Group shareholders are up 3.8% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. If we look back over five years, the returns are even better, coming in at 19% per year for five years. It's quite possible the business continues to execute with prowess, even as the share price gains are slowing. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Delegat Group better, we need to consider many other factors. For instance, we've identified 2 warning signs for Delegat Group (1 shouldn't be ignored) that you should be aware of.
