Emily Ratajkowski calls out Netflix's Blonde film on TikTok

Emily Ratajkowski has spoken out criticising Netflix's new Marilyn Monroe film Blonde in a recent TikTok video.

The movie has been the subject of backlash since its release on 23rd September (later dropping on Netflix on 28th). Critics have claimed that the film, which fictionalises Monroe's life, focuses too much on her suffering. What's more, viewers have also called out Blonde's depiction of sexual assault and abortion.

Model and actress Ratajkowski took to TikTok to criticise the film for "fetishising" female suffering, though admitting that she hasn't yet watched the full movie.

In a video now viewed over two million times, she told viewers, "So I’ve been hearing a lot about this Marilyn Monroe movie Blonde, which I haven’t seen yet, but I’m not surprised to hear that it’s yet another movie fetishising female pain, even in death."

Ratajkowski went on, "We love to fetishise female pain. Look at Amy Winehouse, look at Britney Spears, look at the way we obsess over [Princess] Diana’s death, the way we obsess over dead girls and serial killers." She continued, "Watch any CSI episode, and it’s like this crazy fetishisation of female pain and death."

The actress then opened up about her experience of fetishising "my own pain and my own hurt in my life," saying "I’m like this, 'oh, fucked up girl,' whatever." She went on to tell viewers, "I think we all need to be a little more pissed off," adding the caption, "So done with the fetishisation of female pain and suffering. Bitch Era 2022."

Ratajkowski ended the video by saying, "I'm gonna be pissed off when I see this movie, I already know it. But it's nothing new and, yeah, I'm just gonna get angry."

While many viewers have criticised Blonde, others have defended the project, claiming that it remains faithful to author Joyce Carol Oates' book (which the film is based on), and that it's largely intended to be a fictional take on Monroe's life.

Blonde is streaming now on Netflix.
