A Florida man was charged with child neglect after a toddler shot herself with a handgun that police said the man left out, according to several news outlets.

Orlando Young is charged with a single count of child neglect causing great bodily harm, according to Miami-Dade County court records.

Local 10 News, citing police, reports that Young was watching the young child and allegedly left a handgun on the couch while watching television. The child then ran toward the couch and picked up the gun. The child was taken to the hospital after accidentally discharging the gun and suffering a right hand injury.

WSVN reports that the toddler was traumatized by the incident and needs surgery to reattach a finger.

According to court records, he is also facing a charge of battery by a detainee on a visitor or other detainee.
