Andrew Yang is running for New York City Mayor, the former presidential candidate announced Wednesday.

Yang, who filed the required paperwork to join the 2021 race officially last month, shared a video on social media that underscored his love for the city and what he hopes to accomplish.

"I ran for president because I saw that the economy was not working for everyday Americans. Seeing my city the way it is now breaks my heart," Yang said in reference to the effect of the ongoing novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on New York.

Among Yang's goals are establishing a guaranteed minimum income, providing affordable internet access to residents and improving transportation infrastructure. On his campaign website, he also outlines plans to provide COVID-19 relief and for reopening the city.

In his video, Yang also joked that "maybe we can even save the Knicks."

"New York City has been my home for 25 years. It's Evelyn's home. We're public school parents," he said. "I'm running for mayor for my two boys, for you, and for every New Yorker. Let's fight for a future New York City that we can all be proud of."

Yang, who grew up in New York and moved to the city in 1996, married his wife Evelyn Yang in 2011. The pair share two young sons.

The tech entrepreneur dropped out of the 2020 presidential race last February, and ultimately endorsed President-elect Joe Biden. He recently canvassed for Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff in Georgia ahead of the state's Senate runoffs earlier this month.

A media event is scheduled for Thursday to kick off Yang's campaign, CNN reported.

"I am so excited to get started!" he said in a tweet Wednesday.

Yang joins a crowded field in the New York City mayoral race. The Democratic primary is on June 22.
