    (Bloomberg) -- Treasuries tumbled anew, lifting 30-year yields the most in almost two months, as corporate hedging and trend-following quant funds added fuel to the selloff that’s driven global debt to its worst annual start in years.Rates climbed across notes and bonds, with the long-end rising most and the curve steepening sharply, fueled by block sales in Treasury futures and possible mortgage-related hedging. Before buying interest emerged to pull yields back down, the 30-year yield jumped by 11 basis points at one point, to 2.29%, while the 10-year rate climbed as much as 9 basis points to 1.43%, both roughly one-year highs. Rates in Europe jumped too.Investors are still factoring in the prospect of trillions of dollars of additional U.S. pandemic relief, which is setting the stage for a shift away from historically low Treasury yields and energizing the global economic reflation trade, driving up commodities prices and inflation expectations.As traders price in the potential for a quicker growth rebound, they’re also looking to the day when the Federal Reserve may pare back its massive bond-buying program and raise rates. Interest-rate swap markets continue to price the first quarter-point hike for around mid-2023, having moved that forward from the early-2024.“The market is nervous about additional stimulus, worried about the risks of higher inflation, and concerned about QE tapering,” said Gennadiy Goldberg, senior U.S. rates strategist at TD Securities. “The selloff is likely being exacerbated by convexity hedging and positioning stop-outs.”Corporate deal-hedging amid a large bond issuance slate also added momentum to the selloff, which was concentrated in the long end. The spread between 5- and 30-year yields hit about 167 basis points, the widest since August 2014.   • Oil Heiress’s $150 Million Art Collection Could Ease a Market Crunch

    (Bloomberg) -- This Spring, Sotheby’s New York will auction off about $150 million worth of art and jewels from the estate of the late oil heiress Anne Marion, who died last year.Consisting of multiple blue-chip artworks that remained in Marion’s collection for decades, the sale comes at a time when, thanks to trepidation over online-only transactions, top-tier artworks are in short supply at auction. Marion, who inherited a Texas oil fortune built on a Texas ranching fortune, was president of Burnett Oil Company, Burnett Ranches, and the Burnett Foundation in Fort Worth, Texas.A major philanthropist, she founded the private Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe in 1997 with $10 million in seed money. She also spearheaded the $65 million expansion of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and served for a period of time as a trustee of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Through her charitable donations, Marion gave away more than $600 million.Lifelong CollectorAll the while, Marion was acquiring art for herself.“She was a lifelong, passionate collector,” says Michael Macaulay, a senior vice president and senior international specialist for contemporary art at Sotheby’s. The works coming to auction, he continues, “were mostly acquired in the 1980s and some in the 1990s.”Roughly 200 lots from Marion’s collection will be included multiple sales, Macaulay says. Eighteen of the top artworks will be featured in a standalone evening sale; the rest, including a standalone jewelry sale featuring a pair of emerald and diamond ear clips that carry a $150,000 high estimate, will be spread across 2021.Marion is survived by her husband John Marion, the former chairman and chief auctioneer of Sotheby’s North America, whom she married in 1988.Top LotsThe top lot of the entire sale is a work by the Abstract Expressionist painter Clyfford Still, PH-125 (1948-No. 1) from 1948. Estimated between $25 million and $35 million, the work is a rare instance of the artist’s output coming to market: Approximately 95% of everything he ever created resides in the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver.There’s also a Richard Diebenkorn, Ocean Park No. 40 from 1971, estimated between $20 million and $30 million, which Macaulay says Marion acquired in the early 1980s. An abstract painting by Gerhard Richter from 1992 “is a bit of an outlier,” Macaulay says, insofar as Marion purchased in 2012 at Sotheby’s fairly late in her life. “It’s representative of her lifelong passion for collecting,” he says, “in that she never stopped.”Marion bought the work for $16.9 million; currently, it’s estimated between $14 million and $18 million, an estimate that reflects a softening of Richter’s market.Similarly, Sotheby’s will be selling a Warhol Double Elvis from 1963, which carries an estimate of $20 million to $30 million.   • Treasury ‘Tantrum’ Erases $14 Billion ETF Pandemic Rally

    (Bloomberg) -- A breakneck selloff in the bond market left one of the biggest Treasury exchange-traded funds bleeding.The $14 billion iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (ticker TLT) has plunged 11% this year as long-dated Treasury yields climbed, fueled by building wagers on a rebound in inflation. Investors have yanked over $3.2 billion from the fund so far in 2021, whittling TLT’s total assets to the lowest level since mid-2019, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.Covid-19 vaccine rollouts combined with the prospect of further fiscal aid from the Biden administration has forced a reckoning of sorts for the Treasury market, where long-dated yields were hovering near historic lows entering 2021. Breakeven inflation rates have soared to multi-year highs, dragging benchmark 10-year yields to the highest in over a year, as the economic outlook brightens. That point was reinforced by Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell this week as he said the recent run-up in bond yields is “a statement of confidence” in the economy, while downplaying the risk of a sustained pickup in price pressures.Read: Powell Pushes Back on Concerns of Prices Rising, Overheating“It certainly feels like a tantrum is underway. Despite the Fed’s repeated reassurances that they see no clear risks to higher inflation investors are not convinced,” said Subadra Rajappa, head of U.S. rates strategy at Societe Generale SA. “Any hints of change in Fed asset purchases could put the brakes on the back-end selloff. Barring that, there could be more room for yields to rise.”TLT extended its drop into a fifth consecutive day, bringing the fund’s price to the lowest level since last March. It rallied more than 16% in 2020 as the central bank grappled to contain the fallout of the pandemic, slashing rates to near-zero and unleashing a spate of bond-buying facilities to keep credit flowing as the economy plunged into a recession.Two months into 2021, the landscape is starkly different. While the U.S. unemployment rate clocks in at a still-elevated 6.3%, that’s below the 6.5% level that policymakers had forecast last June. It’s a similar picture in corporate America. Nearly 80% of S&P 500 companies that reported earnings so far this season have beat analyst estimates -- a near-record pace, according to data compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence.TLT’s plunge has pushed the fund’s 14-day relative strength index (RSI) -- which measures the magnitude and persistence of price movement -- the most into oversold territory since November 2016. In the eyes of Bleakley Advisory Group’s Peter Boockvar, that could slow losses.“Bonds are getting oversold, though in the short term and I wouldn’t be surprised if the rise took a breather,” Boockvar wrote in a note Wednesday on higher yields.Bond bears aren’t convinced. Short interest as a percentage of shares outstanding on TLT is hovering near a three-year high, IHS Markit Ltd. data show.While Powell signaled on Tuesday that central bank was poised to keep up its pace of asset purchases even as the economic outlook improved, that wasn’t enough to soothe the market, according to Priya Misra of TD Securities.“We need the Fed to sound concerned about the rise in real rates and suggest that they are not about to taper anytime soon. That can scare away some shorts in the Treasury market,” Misra, the firm’s head of global rates strategy, noted. “He said that the rise in rates reflects confidence in the economy.
