Alicia Quarles is celebrating a monumental birthday for her little ones.

The journalist and GMA3 contributor, 42, celebrated twins Hudson and Harlow's first birthday last week, sharing photos from their party exclusively with PEOPLE. The party was held in Charlotte, North Carolina, where the twins were born. Quarles tells PEOPLE it "felt fitting" to have their party there since she still splits her time between Charlotte and New York City.

In a sweet photo, the proud mom of two holds her two babies as she sits in a chair, with her daughter Harlow on one leg and her son Hudson on the other.

"It was a sit-down brunch with very close family and friends," Quarles shares. "My niece London came up with the prince and princess theme. That was reflected on their duel cake. My niece also served as the DJ."

The birthday party included an epic pink and blue cake, which was segmented down the middle. There were two crowns on top, as well as a "1" candle.

"Their dad selected Harlow and Hudson's Ralph Lauren looks. Harlow's dress stayed pristine during the festivities. Hudson's didn't stand a chance. He was enjoying himself eating everything. I think more food ended up on his sweater than in his mouth," Quarles jokes.

"The twins have such different personalities, which were on display during their party. Hudson stayed up the entire time dancing, laughing and eating. Harlow went to sleep in the middle of the party, and only woke up when we sang 'Happy Birthday.' In fact, we had to sing 'Happy Birthday' twice, since she almost missed it the first time."

The proud mom also shared photos of the event space, which included pink, blue and golden balloons, as well as white tablecloths and golden stars.

"This past year has not been easy. I have been learning to be a mom on my own," she shares. "It's different when you have twins. My single days as a girl on the go have slowed down, but I have figured out a really good work/life balance."

"It takes a strong village from their dad, to the nannies, family and friends."

Last year, Quarles shared with PEOPLE that she welcomed her twins via caesarian section on Feb. 16.  "My girl was breech and wouldn't turn," she said of why doctors opted for a c-section, "I had no idea about this recovery."

While the babies remained in the hospital for a few more days, both were "one hundred percent healthy," she said. The same went for their mom, who was on the mend and in good spirits.

While she chooses to keep the identity of her babies' father private, Quarles shared glimpses into her pregnancy journey on social media without revealing she was expecting twins. When she herself found out, the news came as a surprise, especially considering her journey to motherhood.

"I actually froze my eggs at 39," she said. "I was preparing to go to a sperm donor and everything." But after a romantic reconnection with a friend, whom she's known for years, she became pregnant naturally. "I still have 17 eggs on ice, never used. I knew I wanted to have kids I just was shocked when they said twins!"

But that shock quickly subsided. "I just felt a total peace come over me and I felt like it all made sense, that I was meant to carry these babies, despite my age."
