Here's Why We Think International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) Might Deserve Your Attention Today

The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

International Business Machines' Earnings Per Share Are Growing

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price should eventually follow. So it makes sense that experienced investors pay close attention to company EPS when undertaking investment research. To the delight of shareholders, International Business Machines has achieved impressive annual EPS growth of 46%, compound, over the last three years. Growth that fast may well be fleeting, but it should be more than enough to pique the interest of the wary stock pickers.

It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. International Business Machines shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 4.4% to 16%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are International Business Machines Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Since International Business Machines has a market capitalisation of US$193b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But thanks to their investment in the company, it's pleasing to see that there are still incentives to align their actions with the shareholders. We note that their impressive stake in the company is worth US$190m. We note that this amounts to 0.1% of the company, which may be small owing to the sheer size of International Business Machines but it's still worth mentioning. This still shows shareholders there is a degree of alignment between management and themselves.

Should You Add International Business Machines To Your Watchlist?

International Business Machines' earnings per share have been soaring, with growth rates sky high.
