Housing NZ celebrates completion of Hamilton development

Housing New Zealand is celebrating the completion of 16 newly built homes for Hamilton by inviting the local community to an Open Home tour on Wednesday 4 November from 4-6pm. The new homes at 5 - 11 Korimako Street are two-bedroom, single-storey homes built to modern standards with double glazing, internal garages and landscaping. "We’re excited about these new homes, which will help meet demand for smaller homes in the area that are warm, dry and easy to maintain - and we want to show them off," Housing New Zealand’s Area Manager Raewyn Vooght says. "We’re inviting the neighbours along to have a ‘sneak peak’ of one of the properties, and to meet the local team who will be managing them. Neighbours have watched the development as it has progressed and we are keen to show them the new additions to their community." Tenants will be moving in over the next few weeks and one of them, Debi Hume, feels the new homes in Korimako Street tick all the right boxes. "I’m very grateful to be moving into one of these new homes. It signifies a fresh start for me. It’s lovely, light-filled and modern and has a heat pump so will be warm and dry. It is close to the shops and bus stops and I really like the neighbourhood. "I feel like Housing New Zealand has really listened to what people want in a home and taken it on-board with this development." Hamilton is an area of relatively high demand for Housing New Zealand homes, particularly for smaller one and two-bedroom properties. "This redevelopment is a great example of Housing New Zealand reconfiguring its portfolio to align with demand and better meet the needs of tenants," Ms Vooght says. "They are ideally suited for older people living alone or smaller families." The new homes replaced four three-bedroom homes that were no longer fit-for-purpose and did not make the best use of the land. Three of the four homes on the original site were transported to Spring Hill Corrections Facility where they are currently being modernised by inmates. This joint initiative with the Department of Corrections allows Housing New Zealand to provide housing for those most in need while also helping prisoners develop trade skills that will increase their chances of gaining employment after release. The houses will be relocated to an area of high demand.
