Investing in EQ (CVE:EQ) five years ago would have delivered you a 105% gain

The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. Long term EQ Inc. (CVE:EQ) shareholders would be well aware of this, since the stock is up 105% in five years. On top of that, the share price is up 16% in about a quarter.

Now it's worth having a look at the company's fundamentals too, because that will help us determine if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.

Because EQ made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

In the last 5 years EQ saw its revenue grow at 20% per year. That's well above most pre-profit companies. So it's not entirely surprising that the share price reflected this performance by increasing at a rate of 15% per year, in that time. This suggests the market has well and truly recognized the progress the business has made. EQ seems like a high growth stock - so growth investors might want to add it to their watchlist.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that EQ shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 7.0% over one year. However, the TSR over five years, coming in at 15% per year, is even more impressive. The pessimistic view would be that be that the stock has its best days behind it, but on the other hand the price might simply be moderating while the business itself continues to execute. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Take risks, for example - EQ has 3 warning signs (and 1 which is concerning) we think you should know about.
