PM not involved in Hillside decision

Unemployed Hillside rail workers are being told there's nothing the Government could have done to save their jobs.

KiwiRail has confirmed 90 job losses at the the Dunedin workshops.

The Prime Minister says the board decided it wasn't viable to keep Hillside going.

He's not taking the fall for the job losses.

"Well I understand why people feel angry when they lose their job, but I'm simply saying that decision is actually made by KiwiRail.

"The only way the government could have overridden that decision was to financially compensate KiwiRail and we just don't normally act in that way."
