Residents in the Wellington surburb of Newtown are concerned plans for a new liquor shop will cause harm to the community.
The Newtown Liquor Shop is proposed to open up on Newtown Ave, within 100 metres of two other off-license liquor stores.
Newtown Community Centre co-ordinator, Anna Costley, says there are already four off-licenses in Newtown, and that's enough.
"New Zealand research has shown that the high density of alcohol outlets is positively correlated with alcohol harm in a community."
Anna Costly says the proposed site is near a supermarket and playground - so an area where there are a lot of children around.
"Because it's right by the supermarket as well, there's a lot of kids and families always walking around that area.
"And it's directly up the road from some council housing, a community hall and two other public playgrounds."
