Horticulture New Zealand says we are lagging behind most of the world when it comes to country of origin labelling on vegetable products.
The call comes after Australian growers' industry body AUSVEG claimed produce grown in China, is being packaged or modified in New Zealand and then sent on to Australia with the label 'Made in New Zealand from local and imported ingredients'.
Horticulture New Zealand chief executive Peter Silcock says consumers wouldn't mind paying a bit more, if it ensures quality products.
"We believe it is really important information, and information that consumers are willing to pay what is probably just a cent or two more for.
"It's not a significant cost when you come down to the cost of the product."
Peter Silcock says if people want New Zealand grown products they need to look for the labels 'product of New Zealand' or 'grown in New Zealand' because 'made in New Zealand' often has both local and imported ingredients.
