If you could have seen into the future last year, and laid eyes on these new photographs of Kate Middleton, you'd no doubt be wondering what on earth was going on. Face masks are a new item in most of our lives. Following research that shows they can be extremely effective at preventing the spread of coronavirus (and may also benefit the wearer, too) the government has implemented them as mandatory inside shops and on public transport.

Going one step further, the Duchess of Cambridge has been pictured wearing the prettiest of floral face masks during a visit to a charity in Sheffield. Yesterday, Kate travelled from Norfolk where she's been in lockdown with her family, to South Yorkshire where she paid a visit to Baby Basic UK & Baby Basics Sheffield. Baby Basics is a volunteer project supporting families in need struggling to provide for their newborns, and as part of her engagement, the Duchess helped unload supplies (while wearing protective gloves).

Throughout the height of the coronavirus pandemic in this country, both Kate and Prince William remained isolated, conducting engagements over video call (including one particularly enjoyable game of bingo). From late June, they began doing IRL visits, but largely kept these local and outdoors. Yesterday's visit was the first she has done partially indoors, however, hence the addition of a face mask.

During her meeting with Baby Basic UK, the Duchess said stories she'd heard of young families struggling had previously moved her to tears. "It can get very emotional. In remember a couple of the families I met from King’s Lynn and I went home and literally burst into tears, their stories were so moving," she said.

Face masks have, somehow, attracted controversy in some places, with individuals refusing to wear them despite the notable protection they provide for others. The debate, which is particularly rife in America, has led numerous high profile people such as Jennifer Aniston to post photographs of themselves wearing one in a bid to encourage others to do the same.

But these new photographs of Kate Middleton will hopefully encourage some naysayers to think again. Because, well, if she can do it - why can't the rest of us?
