This Metal Mascara Doesn't Have Any Bristles But It Gives Me the Longest Lashes

Mascara is my desert-island makeup product, so trust me when I say I've tested a ton of them. From drugstore to high-end, and volumizing to lengthening formulas, there isn't a mascara I'm not willing to try.

So, naturally, when I saw that the Neogen Dermalogy Extra Slim Metal Maxicara ($42; neogenlab.us) went viral on TikTok, I knew that was the next product I had to test. And let me tell you, the results were sort of mind-blowing.

For some background, Neogen Dermalogy is a K-beauty brand that's known for its skincare products, which is why when I learned that its mascara had gone viral, I was admittedly confused. Nonetheless, the brand isn't new to TikTok fame as their Pore Tight Peeling Mousse has also gone viral, so I had high hopes.

The mascara comes in a pink cylindrical tube that becomes thin at the cap. Aesthetically, it's very pleasing. When you open it, you'll find a metal wand with product coated at the top of the "brush," except the "brush" is really just a thin metal stick. If you look closely, you'll notice that there are tiny ridges carved into the tip of wand, which is the part that coats your lashes and takes the place of bristles.

According to the brand, the mascara was carefully designed to apply the proper amount of formula on each eyelash while offering a neat and precise application. After trying it out, I can attest it does just that.

My initial reactions were similar to TikTok user, Rachel Rigler, who records herself testing the mascara for the first time and is utterly confused. You don't expect a thin metal wand without bristles to do anything to your lashes, but let me tell you, it does. I didn't immediately see much lift after the first application, but the mascara did darken and lengthen my lashes. However, the magic really starts to happen two to three coats in, which is when you really start to see your lashes become long and more lifted.

The wand is so easy to use and because it's so thin and long, it coats every single lash, even the tiny ones on the inner corners and your bottom lashes. The thin wand is also ultra easy to control, so you get less mascara transfer onto your eyelids and on any eyeshadow.

The formula is a bit tacky, which can potentially cause clumping if you apply one too many coats. However, that slight stickiness helps to curl my otherwise stick-straight lashes and helps keep them lifted, so I personally don't mind it. Whenever I notice my lashes starting to stick together, I simply use the bristles of a clean mascara wand to comb them out.

Ultimately, I am a big fan of this mascara for its ability to lengthen, lift, and coat every single lash. If you're someone who struggles with straight lashes, aims for long dreamy lashes, or both, you might be pleasantly surprised.
