Nautilus recalls about 17,000 Bowflex dumbbells

Nautilus recalls about 17,000 Bowflex SelectTech 1090 dumbbells due to injury hazard

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Nautilus Inc. is voluntarily recalling about 17,000 of its Bowflex SelectTech 1090 dumbbells due to the possibility that users can get injured.

The Vancouver, Wash., company said that the weight selector dial on the black steel dumbbells can fail, causing weight plates to fall when the dumbbell is lifted from its cradle.

Nautilus has received three reports of injuries to the user's foot or leg. It has received 16 reports of the weight selector dial failing.

The company and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued the recall on Thursday. The dumbbells were sold for about $600 at sporting goods stores, on Nautilus' website and at other online retailers from May 2011 through August 2011.

The dumbbells, which have the word "Bowflex" written in grey along each handle's top, are sold in pairs and can have a weight capacity of 10 to 90 pounds. A selector dial on each end of the cradle lists weights in red, starting at 10 and increasing in increments of five. The red Bowflex logo is at the center of the dial.

The recall involves dumbbells with a date-of-manufacture code in the serial number in the range of 1111 through 1136. The date code is the four-digit code following the letters "MAG" in the serial number. The serial number is on a white label on the bottom of the cradle.

Dumbbells with a black dot on the inside portion of the weight selector dial are not included the recall.

Consumers should immediately stop using the dumbbells and contact Nautilus at (800) 416-7271 for a free repair kit. Consumers can also visit www.bowflex.com for more information.
