Nokia (NOK), T-Mobile & Intel Collaborate to Develop 5G

Nokia Corporation NOK has signed an agreement with T-Mobile TMUS and Intel INTC on 5G network to introduce a 28 GHz outdoor 5G commercial radio system on air in Bellevue, WA.

To that end,  Nokia 5G commercial AirScale solution and the 5G Mobile Trial Platform from Intel was employed to conduct a data session on a 28 GHz radio in a field test environment allowing T-Mobile to deploy its first inter-vendor 5G network.

The collaboration supports the companies’ objective to uplift standards, facilitate the 5G ecosystem of chipsets and devices and provide the best network experience to Un-carrier customers.

The deal is the first step in moving 5G development from labs to the field, expanding the 5G mmWave radio performance and propagation testing into the real world. The testing also provides T-Mobile and Nokia an insight into how mmWave based 5G can be integrated into the networks already in existence and how the same co-exists with LTE.

The 5G technology envisions a broad spectrum of ranges varying from 600 MHz to mmWave. A nationwide deployment strategy must focus on vast area coverage to support mobility as 5G is expected to create smoother broadband experience with powerful connectivity.
