NZME wins top honours at 2015 Canon Media Awards

NZME is thrilled to be leading news, sport and entertainment journalism, evident by the 24 wins at tonight’s Canon Media Awards.

NZME Publishing’s flagship publication The New Zealand Herald won the top industry prize, Newspaper of the Year, at the awards evening held at Sky City Convention Centre in Auckland. Columnist of the Year went to Herald journalist Michele Hewitson and Herald Investigations Editor Jared Savage was named Reporter of the Year.

Viva was named Best Newspaper Inserted Magazine, while NZHerald.co.nz won Best Website.

The Herald Editor, Shayne Currie says "We’re absolutely thrilled. This year’s awards - as well as our 60-plus finalists - epitomise the depth and breadth of the Herald’s journalism today. It’s fantastic to see so many talented, hard-working and dedicated people within the newsroom being honoured - and of course, for the whole team to be recognised with the Newspaper of the Year and best website awards. We’re all totally focused on ensuring our journalism - across news, sport, business and entertainment - reaches our readers when they want it, and how they want it."

This year saw the prestigious Fellow to Wolfson College in Cambridge awarded to a surprised Shayne Currie, who has a wealth of journalistic experience spanning more than two decades in the industry.

Chief Executive of NZME, Jane Hastings says "I cannot think of a more worthy and respected recipient of the Wolfson College, Cambridge Fellow than Shayne. He is an exceptional talent with years of experience and industry know-how, the basis for his recent promotion to Managing Editor, Herald Brands.

"I am delighted with the number of winners and finalists the company has achieved in this year’s Cannon Awards. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all our teams, whether recognised at the awards or not, for their ongoing dedication and motivation to deliver the very best NZME Publishing has to offer. Tonight has capped off a great week for NZME following our success at the New Zealand Radio Awards last night."
