Oamaru firm fined $58k after hand crushed

An Oamaru meat processor has been fined $47,250 and ordered to pay $10,500 to an employee whose hand was crushed by unguarded rollers.

Lean Meats Oamaru was handed down the punishment in Oamaru District Court on Thursday, the Ministry of Business and Innovation said.

In January, the worker was trying to mop up water from a conveyor belt when her hand was crushed the fixed rollers. She needed hospital treatment.

The ministry said the company could easily have installed appropriate guards.
