One EOG Resources, Inc. (NYSE:EOG) insider upped their stake by 46% in the previous year

Insiders were net buyers of EOG Resources, Inc.'s (NYSE:EOG ) stock during the past year. That is, insiders bought more stock than they sold.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

EOG Resources Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Independent Director Michael Kerr made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$4.3m worth of shares at a price of US$86.00 each. Even though the purchase was made at a significantly lower price than the recent price (US$111), we still think insider buying is a positive. Because the shares were purchased at a lower price, this particular buy doesn't tell us much about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Does EOG Resources Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. EOG Resources insiders own 0.3% of the company, currently worth about US$202m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
