Oscar winner Mira Sorvino's tub used to be her kitchen

Before she was an Oscar-winning actress, Mira Sorvino lived in a $580-per-month New York City apartment that had the tub in the kitchen. “I did live in a really disgusting apartment with a lot of vermin and a lot of strange people in it. And my tub was in the kitchen and my bathroom was in the hall,” Sorvino told Jen Rogers on Yahoo Finance’s My Three Cents.

While her living conditions may have been rough, Sorvino remembers that time in her career fondly. “There was something romantic about having only enough money to get through that next two weeks.”

While she auditioned for roles, she was a one-woman gig economy, moonlighting and cobbling together paychecks from a wide variety of employers. “I had a job at TriBeCa Productions as a script reader in development ... I waitressed at a place called Mumbles. .. I bartended at a place that was on 76th street... I tutored Chinese ... I did some freelance photography. I was a model briefly,” she recalled.

For fun, Sorvino would treat herself to little splurges. “I used to go to the Betsey Johnson sale rack, and I would save up all my tips and buy myself a sun dress that was on sale or something or just going out with my friends and having a good time— and it had nothing to do with money. Just riding the subway everywhere, just doing the real New York starving artist routine. And it was fun and it was great, and it wasn’t materialistic at all.”

I’m guessing she doesn’t miss the apartment though.
