Yahoo Finance Qantas shock ranking in airline awards
Qantas has jumped from eighth position last year to the top five in the 2022 Skytrax World Airline Awards.
The promotion to fifth place comes despite Qantas being plagued with problems this year including lost baggage, delays and cancelled flights.
The improved ranking may come as a shock to thousands of angry Qantas passengers who have regularly complained about the airline on social media.
Only last week the airline was criticized for dumping and then having to reinstate vegetarian meals on short haul flights, and embattled CEO Alan Joyce again faced calls to resign as many Australians voiced their complaints with the current standard of service.
The World Airline Awards, which have been described as the “Oscars of the airline industry”, noted that Qantas has built a reputation for excellence in safety, operational reliability, engineering and maintenance, and customer service.
It said Qantas is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading long distance airlines and one of the strongest brands in Australia.

Skytrax says the awards are totally independent and impartial with all of the customer survey costs and awards events paid by the organisers. However, Skytrax has reportedly refused to answer questions on what the business actually does or how the survey data is collected and used. Aviation critics and experts have questioned the methodology particularly in light of the Qantas ranking.
Australian airlines Virgin and Jetstar (owned and operated by Qantas) dropped in ranking this year. Virgin fell from 34th to 43rd, while Jetstar slipped one place from 56 to 57. Regional airline Rex was rated 72nd place after being ranked at 226 in 2021.
Qatar, Singapore, Emirates and ANA All Nippon Airlines took out the top rankings in order for best airline with Singapore Airlines taking our pole position for best cabin staff.
