Quite a few insiders invested in BHP Group Limited (ASX:BHP) last year which is positive news for shareholders

Generally, when a single insider buys stock, it is usually not a big deal. However, when several insiders are buying, like in the case of BHP Group Limited (ASX:BHP), it sends a favourable message to the company's shareholders.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At BHP Group

The Independent Non-Executive Chairman of the Board Ken MacKenzie made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for AU$250k worth of shares at a price of AU$40.98 each. Although we like to see insider buying, we note that this large purchase was at significantly below the recent price of AU$49.23. Because the shares were purchased at a lower price, this particular buy doesn't tell us much about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Insider Ownership Of BHP Group

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Insiders own 0.03% of BHP Group shares, worth about AU$69m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At BHP Group Tell Us?

The fact that there have been no BHP Group insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. However, our analysis of transactions over the last year is heartening. Insiders own shares in BHP Group and we see no evidence to suggest they are worried about the future. While we like knowing what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
