Several Insiders Invested In Origin Materials Flagging Positive News

Usually, when one insider buys stock, it might not be a monumental event. But when multiple insiders are buying like they did in the case of Origin Materials, Inc. (NASDAQ:ORGN), that sends out a positive message to the company's shareholders.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Origin Materials Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Independent Chairman of the Board Karen Richardson made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$200k worth of shares at a price of US$1.37 each. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, at around the current price, which is US$1.47. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. While we always like to see insider buying, it's less meaningful if the purchases were made at much lower prices, as the opportunity they saw may have passed. Happily, the Origin Materials insiders decided to buy shares at close to current prices.

In the last twelve months insiders purchased 219.29k shares for US$300k. On the other hand they divested 47.94k shares, for US$266k. In total, Origin Materials insiders bought more than they sold over the last year. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. Origin Materials Insiders Bought Stock Recently

Over the last three months, we've seen significantly more insider buying, than insider selling, at Origin Materials. Insiders spent US$300k on shares. But we did see Independent Director Pia Cook sell shares worth US$20k. The buying outweighs the selling, which suggests that insiders may believe the company will do well in the future.

Does Origin Materials Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Insiders own 9.2% of Origin Materials shares, worth about US$19m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
