Smart Sand (NASDAQ:SND) shareholders have earned a 74% return over the last year

It hasn't been the best quarter for Smart Sand, Inc. (NASDAQ:SND) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 12% in that time. But that doesn't change the reality that over twelve months the stock has done really well. Looking at the full year, the company has easily bested an index fund by gaining 74%.

Let's take a look at the underlying fundamentals over the longer term, and see if they've been consistent with shareholders returns.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Over the last twelve months, Smart Sand actually shrank its EPS by 88%.

Given the share price gain, we doubt the market is measuring progress with EPS. Indeed, when EPS is declining but the share price is up, it often means the market is considering other factors.

Smart Sand's revenue actually dropped 43% over last year. So the fundamental metrics don't provide an obvious explanation for the share price gain.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Smart Sand shareholders have gained 74% (in total) over the last year. That certainly beats the loss of about 2.3% per year over three years. We're generally cautious about putting too much weigh on shorter term data, but the recent improvement is definitely a positive. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Smart Sand better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example - Smart Sand has 2 warning signs we think you should be aware of.
