Stranger Things season 4 is set to "tentatively" restart filming on September 17, after production of the hit Netflix series was suspended in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The film and TV industry is making gradual steps back to normality, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter. Stranger Things has been shooting in Georgia, which is aiming to be one of the main US states in leading the restart of film and TV productions, the publication added.

"Georgians want to get back to work and show that we can not only beat this virus but be leaders in this industry to hopefully encourage America to get back to work," said John Rooker, the founder and owner of Atlanta Metro Studios (AMS), filming location of HBO's Watchmen.

Along with Stranger Things, Netflix is also planning to resume production on the comedy thriller Red Notice, starring Ryan Reynolds, Wonder Woman's Gal Gadot and Dwayne Johnson, which is also set to return to filming in Georgia.

It is not known what the delay to production will mean for the release date of Stranger Things, with cast member David Harbour previously suggesting that the air date would be "pushed back". The Chief Hopper actor revealed on Instagram that the new episodes were "supposed to come out early next year, I think, although I don't have authority on this".

Meanwhile, show-runner Ross Duffer has previously said that the next season is likely be the show's last. He told Vulture back in 2017: "We’re thinking it will be a four-season thing and then out. I don't know if we can justify something bad happening to them [the characters of Hawkins] once a year. They're going to have to get the f**k out of this town!"

Stranger Things seasons 1-3 are now streaming on Netflix. Season 4's release date has yet to be confirmed.
